Regardless of whether you are having urgent surgery or elective surgery, there are a number of guidelines you will need to follow.
• You will need to have a pre-operative physical exam by your family doctor. This is required before you can have any anesthesia, including local anesthesia.
• You will be asked to stop any blood thinners for one week prior to surgery. You need to verify this is medically appropriate for you with your family doctor. Blood thinners include drugs like Coumadin and Aspirin.
• You will be unable to eat or drink anything for a certain number of hours before surgery. Depending upon your particular procedure, you may also have other restrictions and instructions.
• If you will be going home the day of surgery, you will not be allowed to drive. A responsible adult must stay with you the first night.
There may be additional insructions for you to follow, based on both the type of procedure you need and your overall medical condition. Following all of your instructions will ensure a safe surgical experience for you.
